The scale of non-covalent interactions

In kJ/mol: metal-ligand coordination 4040 to 400400; hydrogen bond 44 to 120120; ion-dipole 5050 to 200200; hydrophobic effect 11 to 4040 (entropic); π-π stacking 22 to 1010; van der Waals 0.10.1 to 55. The first two are strongly directional. Taken one at a time they are weak; their number and their cooperativity hold the assembly together.
