Finding your way around the periodic table

Period, group, block, family: place any element in the table from Z and work out its chemical behaviour from there.

The essentials

1

Period and group

The 118118 elements are arranged by **increasing atomic number ZZ. A period** (row) corresponds to one value of nn: that of the valence shell. A group (column, from 11 to 1818) gathers elements with the same valence configuration, hence similar chemical properties.
