Computational quantum chemistry: choosing a level of theory

Pick a functional and a basis set sensibly, read a calculation output and convert hartrees into kJ/mol to compare two structures.

The essentials

1

Schrödinger and Born-Oppenheimer

The goal is to solve H^ψ=Eψ\hat{H}\psi = E\psi for the electrons. An exact solution exists only for H\ce{H} and HX2X+\ce{H2+}; everywhere else, one approximates. Born-Oppenheimer: the nuclei, far heavier, stay fixed while the electrons adjust. The result is a potential energy surface: its minima are stable structures, its saddle points are transition states.
