Hybridisation: sp, sp², sp³ and σ/π bonds

Assign sp, sp² or sp³ to any atom by counting its domains, then tally the σ and π bonds of a molecule without missing any.

The essentials

1

What hybridisation is

A linear combination of atomic orbitals on the same atom, giving directed, equivalent hybrid orbitals: kk orbitals mixed give kk hybrids. It is a construction of the model, not an observable phenomenon: hybridisation is deduced from geometry, never the reverse.
