What a catalyst does — and does not do

In homogeneous catalysis, catalyst and reactants share the same phase (usually liquid). The catalyst opens another pathway, with a lower activation energy; it is tied up in intermediates and then regenerated. It changes neither ΔrG\Delta_rG^\circ nor KK: it speeds up the forward and reverse directions equally.
