First law and reaction enthalpy

The signs of Q and W, going from ΔU to ΔH, and Hess's law applied the right way round: compute a reaction enthalpy without dropping marks.

The essentials

1

First law and sign convention

For a closed system (exchanges energy, not matter): ΔU=Q+W\Delta U = Q + W Heat QQ and work WW are counted positive when received by the system, negative when given out. UU is a state function; QQ and WW depend on the path taken.
