The covalent bond
Two non-metals do not hand electrons over: they share them. A covalent bond is a bonding pair, i.e. electrons shared between two atoms, each usually supplying one.
Build a Lewis structure without guesswork: count the valence electrons, place the pairs, switch to multiple bonds and check with formal charge.
