Chemical symbols and formulas

Capital, lowercase, subscript, coefficient: the four writing rules, and the method for counting atoms without slipping.

The essentials

One or two letters: the first always a capital, the second always lowercase. Many come from Latin: Fe\ce{Fe} (ferrum), Na\ce{Na} (natrium), Cu\ce{Cu} (cuprum), Au\ce{Au} (aurum).
