Chemical equilibrium: Q, K and the equilibrium composition

Write a reaction quotient, predict the direction of change by comparing Q with K, and compute an equilibrium composition with an ICE table.

The essentials

1

Equilibrium state

A reversible reaction is written with a double arrow: HX2(g)+IX2(g)2HI(g)\ce{H2(g) + I2(g) <=> 2 HI(g)}. Equilibrium is reached when the forward and reverse rates are equal: concentrations no longer change, but the equilibrium stays dynamic at the molecular level.
