Energy of a reaction: exothermic, endothermic, bond energies

Tell an exothermic reaction from an endothermic one, and estimate its energy balance by counting bonds broken and formed, without getting the sign wrong.

Exothermic or endothermic

Exothermic: the system gives out energy to the surroundings (Q<0Q < 0 for the system) and the temperature of the surroundings rises — combustion, acid-base neutralisation, hydration of CaO\ce{CaO}. Endothermic: the system takes in energy (Q>0Q > 0) and the temperature of the surroundings falls — dissolving NHX4NOX3\ce{NH4NO3}, electrolysis, photosynthesis.
